A brief narrative

Dominican missionaries began evangelizing Cagayan around 1595, planting the seeds of Catholic faith in the valley and its communities.

The church dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle was constructed in 1761 and later became the cathedral of Tuguegarao—an enduring center of worship and mission.

The Diocese of Tuguegarao was erected on April 10, 1910, originally covering a wider territory that would later be reconfigured as new jurisdictions were established.

In 1974, Tuguegarao was elevated into a metropolitan archdiocese—marking a new chapter of pastoral leadership and service for the people of Cagayan.
